2022: Wildlife Garden in Aldershot
The most engaging job of 2022 was undertaking a number of tasks in a truly wonderful wildlife garden in Aldershot. With the help of the resident hens new borders were opened up, overgrown areas streamlined for access, a new compost bin system constructed and I also helped in making a small sunken (heat-conserving) greenhouse. By far my favourite garden to work in.
Fruit Tree Pruning - January 2022
First job of the new year - Three days of renovating a small orchard of fruit trees near Holt Pound. Wayward pears and Prunus, plus a few apples including a venerable but storm-damaged veteran Bramley.
Autumn 2021 - Digging and weeding.
In July (partially) and by September fully, I was made redundant from my employment as a Horticulture Support Worker for adults with learning disabilities after seven years. The end of the growing season saw me starting up as a freelance gardener with a few small jobs.
Spring 2020 to Autumn 2021 - Day Services in Lockdown.
Spring 2021 saw the advent of Covid-19 and the closure of Day Services at Bells Piece. While some staff were redeployed to other services, I remained in order to maintain the gardens and to grow produce (as normal) in order to supply the training kitchen with fresh veg' for the remaining residents' meals.
Some Horticultural Projects at Bells Piece 2014 to 2021
Some of the work I participated in at Bells Piece day services for adults with learning disabilities in Farnham and also the creation of a kitchen garden at a second Leonard Cheshire-run property in town.
